The Mind in Quietude

When I did some speaking engagements last summer, a question that I asked  to better understand my audience was

“What do you find yourself struggling with the most?”

Among the top answers were or related to

“Quieting the mind”

Our mind is like the wind. We can’t physically see it, yet it’s always there. Sometimes we hear it in the forefront and other times it’s background noise. Depending on how it is being treated,  the wind can be very calm and tranquil, giving  just the right touch to make a field of flowers dance.

[spacer]

[highlight] Sometimes you hear it’s silence and others you hear it’s roar. [/highlight]

[spacer]

When our Mother Earth is not taken care of; when we pollute, when we engage in war, when we live in fear and anger,  and  when we bring forth strong vibrations of negativity — the calm wind we once knew transforms into a tornado or a hurricane. It’s force is monstrous and when it gets in such a state, it has the capacity to wipe out and destroy everything in it’s path.

[spacer]

[highlight] Take caution from the wind. There’s a reason why it roars.   [/highlight]

[spacer]

There’s a reason why the noises in your head keeps getting louder and louder– that noise has the ability to make you sick to your stomach. Physically ailing your entire body. Exhausting every function of your mental being. When we do not deal with our current circumstances at hand, it becomes a soap opera or in some cases, a horror movie, replaying itself over and over again. The result is depression, insanity or destruction.

Many try to find external ways to cope like consuming alcohol, using drugs, jumping from one lover to another, working until we get into an almost robotic state of being just because we think to ourselves,

[spacer]

“THIS — will numb the pain.”

[spacer]

But it doesn’t work.  The pain still lingers. The chatter still exists.

[spacer]

REPRESSION KILLS, literally.

[spacer]

[highlight]Wait, there’s a bright light ahead[/highlight]

[spacer]

The difference between the wind and the mind is that the mind can be controlled. The mind can be trained, re-engineered, and disciplined so that we can do more beneficial things like … fulfill the purpose of our lives.

Learning how to quiet the mind is a process that takes courage and will power.

[spacer]

How badly do you want to experience silence?

How strong is your desire to heal?

How much do want to refocus all of that negative energy into creativity?

[spacer]

Transformation begins with a quiet mind. A quiet mind is a mind at equinimity. It knows of a past and a future but it chooses to stay in the here and now. It is not a reactionary. It does not get anxious. It does not drift from one thought to another. It is still. It is not on auto-pilot.    A quiet mind does not disturb easily. It is an ocean of peace.

Use the mind to go beyond the mind.

Getting the Mind in Quietude

(1) Sharpen Your Willpower

In school we were taught that our intelligence and in some cases, how far we get in life, is dependent upon our IQ score. ( Yes, an elementary teacher I once had actually told her students this. ) However, the older we get and the more time we get to develop a mind of our own, the more we realize that an IQ score or a GPA average has nothing to do with our intelligence. If so, how do we explain highly intelligent and successful people such as Steve Jobs, who did not go to college but completely revolutionized the way this world communicates? or  Richard Branson, who dropped out of high school at the age of 16 but built a billion dollar empire and has a healthy spirit of a 25 year old? How far you go in life does not depend on your intelligence quotient but your will quotient. How bad do you want it? Sharpening your willpower means taking small easy steps. Your will is like a muscle. When you first start lifting in the gym, let’s say dropping some squats? You don’t start by putting heavy 25 pound plates on each side. You start with as little weight as you can. You perfect your form. You make sure your body is in alignment. Week by week, you slowly and slowly increase the weight until it becomes easy. This type of patience allows for the muscle to strengthen and grow, just like your will. Your willpower gives you energy and endurance. It never refuses you, it never tells you no.

(2) Regularly Budget Time to Yourself

Busy schedule and little time in your hands? It’s what the majority of us tell ourselves over and over again. “I don’t have time for that.” But we should stop to re-evaluate these little stories. We have time to watch an hour of mindless reality tv, we have time to scroll through pages and pages of Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest. We have time to stream videos through Vine and Youtube. We have all the time in the world for the people we love, but we don’t have time for ourselves? Ha! I remember the moment  I laughed to myself when I made the realization that that excuse makes absolutely zero sense. Take out at minimum 20 minutes completely to yourself everyday. Cell phone on silent. No notifications. Email tab closed. All you need is you and only you.

[spacer]

Bring yourself to a comfortable environment. This place can be anywhere in your own home or outside with nature. It could be any place that makes you feel whole, safe and grounded. No noise, no distractions. Slowly, slowly bring your mind into the quietude. Let go of the thoughts you’re holding on to. If they keep re-appearing, it’s important to contemplate them at another time. But this moment right here is a moment of silence that belongs to you, not your thoughts. Listen to your breath and how it’s flowing through your body giving you life. Find your core, your center and remain there for just a few moments. Let it be your meditation.

(3) Do Nothing

This was probably the hardest thing for the once “always busy Sandy face” to be doing. It sounds so simple but it’s quite difficult… While you may feel like doing nothing is completely irrelevant and disadvantageously detrimental to your life, it’s not. You need this. You need this space of nothingness to just cradle you, keep you warm, nurture you, and give you all the room you need to grow, to feel loved, to feel alive, to awaken so that you can come back into the world to create greatness.  This nothing is a catalyst in increasing your productivity. This nothingness is everything. A beautiful lady in one of my audiences shared with us this memorable saying,

[spacer]

[highlight]”When you are doing everything, you are doing nothing.” [/highlight]

[spacer]

Think about it.

[spacer]

(4) Contemplate

When I’m alone, for an hour in my day, I have my contemplation practice. This time of contemplation is a time of witnessing the life of this “Sandy”. I am witnessing the thoughts, the fears, the happiness, the madness, the despair, the grief, the bliss, the peace and everything that makes a human being a human being. When certain thoughts arise during meditation, now is the time to witness them.

[spacer]

Why are they there?

Is it something from your past that you’ve shoved aside because you were too afraid to face it?

Is it something that you find hard admitting to yourself?

What is it?

And why is it there?

From where did it come from?

[spacer]

These thoughts are arising from your unconscious mind to your conscious mind because it craves for your attention. Give it your attention. Take some time to contemplate its existence.

[spacer]

Shower it with your valiance and your love.

[spacer]

And just see where that takes you … I promise it won’t hurt.

There is no denying that we all desire for peace. But that peace happens when we can get to that silence that lives in our core– the part in us that is of our higher being. The more we incorporate silence into our lives, the more we will prevent ourselves from burning out leading to other tense issues in the future. The mind in quietude is a blessing. I hope that soon you will find the valiance within you to experience just how much it can balance your life.
